    From the story:

Some experts believe offers of enticements are sending the wrong message about education.

Shows how much “some experts” know. If it’s one of the few educational experiences that the Detroit Public Schools manage to impart successfully it’s that money talks and bullshit walks.

In order to get all that state sugar the district is willing to share just a little bit of it with the kids. What’s wrong with that message? The district gets something tangible and immediate of value when the kids show up, why shouldn’t the kids get something of tangible, immediate value as well? Mutual, if unequal, back-scratching.

Considering it’s one of the two days that the district gives a good, god-damn whether the kids show up or not, the kids also learn the important lesson that education coming out of the system is not nearly as important as money going in.

That ought to be worth an Ipod or two, shouldn’t it?
