The United Teachers of Dade (UTD) ”hired a forensic auditor to dig into the district’s budget” and launched a PR campaign to expose wasteful spending in the school district.
That’s the UTD of Pat Tornillo.
The UTD that laid off more than a third of its staff, cut salaries and benefits for the rest, and borrowed millions from AFT (item #4).
The UTD that was $19 million in the red.
The UTD that had to sell its headquarters building (item #2).
The UTD that suspended without pay – and sued – the man who caught Tornillo, but continued to pay Tornillo himself (item #3).
The UTD that expelled its own secretary-treasurer for dereliction of duty.
The UTD that still owes AFT $2.4 million – six years later.
It’s also the UTD that once compared one of its own stewards to Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh (item #5).
On second thought, there can’t be an organization in Miami that knows more about fraud, financial mismanagement, wasteful spending and hidden funds than the United Teachers of Dade.
