Re: item #4. I attended the MTA conference last summer. Yes, some of the offerings are silly. However, I went to get two outstanding days of training on teaching foreign languages. Both sessions were much better than anything I’ve ever been offered in-district and the cost can’t be beat. (There aren’t many professional development options that come in at less than triple-digit prices. After 6 hours of intense work on standards-based planning, I think it’s acceptable to indulge in making balloon animals or taking a weaving class.
