Another Year, Another NEA Convention
On my way to San Diego for the 2009 NEA Representative Assembly. The signature media event appears to be U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s “town hall” meeting with the delegates tomorrow morning. It’s conveniently scheduled at the same time as the open hearing on the NEA strategic plan and budget.
Most of the delegates have heard budget details at regional conferences earlier in the year, though I surmise many have yet to hear a word about NEA’s trusteeship over the Indiana State Teachers Association. I don’t know if it has any budget implications for NEA, and the delegates won’t know unless it’s brought up on the floor of the RA.
Either way, I can’t be two places at once, so I’ll be covering the Duncan speech. I doubt there will be a repeat of any performance pay booing, but I do expect some pointed questions on the topic from the delegates.
