“Why didn’t anyone tell me this?”
The Los Angeles Times examines teacher layoffs and what effect they will have on prospective teacher candidates in the future. Unfortunately, the Times seeks the answers from the same people who have been exacerbating the problem for at least five years – the folks at the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning.
In California we’ve been hearing about a teacher shortage for the entire decade, which has led to a rush to the profession and a large increase in hiring, despite flat enrollment. Now those teachers are being laid off and they can’t understand why.
Kate Robertson, 24, thought she was the future. Then she was laid off after her first year.
“After I finished the credential program, I started to hear that it’s really hard to find a job. Why didn’t anyone tell me this?” she said.
I can think of a few reasons, but I think the people who should have known better owe Kate Robertson an answer.
