NEA Convention 2010: No Toilet Equity Study
Try to contain your disappointment, but NEA will not be conducting a study of gender equity in school restroom facilities. I had about a dozen one-liners to add here but I’ll spare you.
Most of this afternoon’s NBIs were voted down, as delegates are being very cost-conscious, defeating items that might have passed in previous years. This is partly due to fiscal prudence and partly to the fact that, for the first time, NEA includes normal staff costs in the price tag of each NBI.
There are, by my count, 50 items left for tomorrow, including those on the war in Afghanistan and getting rid of Arne Duncan. I think there would be a clear majority to combine the two and send Arne Duncan to Afghanistan.
The folks who dreamed up the lunch break protest to save our schools (which I thought should be named the NEA Is Out to Lunch rally) finally figured out that by the time the item was approved it wouldn’t be much good, because the little hand would already be on the 5.
So at the end of this afternoon’s session, they moved to suspend the rules so the idea could be debated immediately, but the delegates would have none of it.
So delegates who go to lunch tomorrow will either be saving our schools, or looking for a place to eat. Their choice.
