Air Force Bake Sale Not a Great Day for Schools After All

Unless you haven’t seen a car in 20 years, you have spotted someone with this bumper sticker:

Now we hear from Fairbanks, Alaska, that the financial health of the school district is directly tied to the Air Force and its fighter jets.

The Air Force is contemplating moving a squadron of F-16s out of Eielson Air Force Base in the next year, and more than 1,000 students from military families will leave with it. The district estimates the move would mean the closure of three schools, a net loss of $4.7 million, and elimination of up to 100 teacher and staff positions.

“This is not a good situation,” said district superintendent Pete Lewis.
