The first round of elections to determine who will lead the Broward Teachers Union ended with no candidate receiving a majority. A runoff will be held between Bernie Schultz, first vice president under indicted former president Pat Santeramo, and Sharon Glickman, one of the four BTU executive board members who brought Santeramo’s indiscretions to the attention of the American Federation of Teachers, launching the process that led to his downfall.
Glickman received 796 votes in the first round. Schultz tallied 555. Fewer than 2,000 votes were cast even though the union claims more than 10,000 members.
The runoff will be conducted by mail over the next two weeks, with the winner announced on October 23.
