A listening post monitoring public education and teachers’ unions.

Ask and Ye Shall Receive

Written By: Mike Antonucci - Dec• 14•12

A panel of experts at the Hoover Institution combed through 21,514 education stories from 43 media outlets to determine what was getting coverage and what wasn’t. They then listed the five most covered stories, and while there is no reference to previous years, I’ll wager this is the first time teachers’ unions made such a list:

1. Charter schools

2. Teachersā€™ unions

3. Special education

4. Pre-Kindergarten education

5. No Child Left Behind

The panel also put together a list of neglected stories, topped by “the cost of teachers’ pensions.” In an act of serendipity, the National Council on Teacher Quality just released a report titled No One Benefits, which examines the health of the teacher retirement system in each state and finds a $390 billion shortfall.

There is no guarantee the report will receive media coverage, but it is an excellent resourceĀ on an important topic.
