Guns, Laws and Education

Written By: Mike Antonucci - Jan• 14•13

With all the uproar about allowing staffers to carry guns in schools, NBC News decided to find out how prevalent the practice is. Turns out 18 states permit adults to carry loaded weapons onto school grounds, usually requiring only the consent of school officials.

Sure, Wyoming, Texas and Montana are on the list, but I was stunned to find California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York and Oregon.

I think this is an important story not because it advances the gun debate one way or the other, but because it illustrates yet again how we often argue angrily about laws before checking to see what they actually say. The NBC story relates how some lawmakers are introducing “guns on school grounds” laws in states that already allow it.
