John Stocks to Step Down as NEA Executive Director

John Stocks, executive director of the National Education Association, will step down from that position as soon as a replacement can be found, NEA officials were informed earlier this month.

The executive director is the chief of staff, overseeing all the day-to-day operations of the union. It is one of the most powerful positions in organized labor and in Democratic Party politics. Stocks has held the position since 2011, after a 21-year career holding high-level staff positions in both NEA and the Wisconsin Education Association Council.

Once a new executive director is named, Stocks will hold an advisory position with NEA through January 2021. Although Stocks was not specific about his immediate plans, he currently holds the position of board chair at the Democracy Alliance, which is “the largest network of donors dedicated to building the progressive movement in the United States.” NEA expects him to build on his fundraising work leading up to the 2020 Presidential election.
